Frequently Asked Questions
How do I keep my baby's teeth clean?
During the first 6 months of life, you need to clean the baby´s mouth with gauze. It is best to do this after each feeding and before sleep time every night. We also have fluoride supplements available if you are interested. Once the first tooth appears, it will be necessary to brush the tooth using a very soft-bristled brush. This should be done after each feeding and before sleep time every night. Make sure you wean the child from the bottle or pacifier between 12 and 18 months of age. If you fail to do this in time, your child may experience baby bottle tooth decay.
At what age should I begin bringing my child to the dentist?
You should bring your child to the dentist either when they get their first tooth or no later than age 1. Dr. Piedra will then be able to detect and treat any problems that may arise, as well as begin preventative dentistry. Tooth decay is possible as early as age 1. We may also advise you to have a space maintainer put in to help ensure there is ample room for new teeth to fill in.
How often should my child visit the dentist?
Normally, bringing your child in every six months will suffice, although it is best to consult with Dr. Piedra to discuss a specific schedule of exams. These exams are generally based on your child´s individual needs and will be necessary from the first visit at 6 months to a year, and lasting all the way through the teen years.
What do I need to know prior to my first visit?
Normally a first visit includes a thorough examination, information on home care such as brushing and flossing directions, and even a bit on diet and its impact on normal formation of teeth and gums. We will discuss prevention and treatment of gum disease at this visit.
