Sedation Dentistry

Nitrous oxide sedation

Some children feel anxious before or during treatment. Your child may need more support than our gentle, caring manners to feel truly comfortable. So we may use nitrous oxide to safely, effectively calm your child`s fears. Nitrous oxide sedation uses a blend of two gases, oxygen and nitrous oxide. When inhaled, it is absorbed by the body and has a calming effect. Normal breathing eliminates nitrous oxide from the body. Nitrous oxide sedation is very safe, mild, easily taken and non-addictive. Nitrous oxide sedation is not effective for children who have severe anxiety, nasal congestion, extensive treatment needs or any discomfort wearing a nasal mask. That’s why we offer alternatives.

Oral sedation

Oral sedation uses medications to help the child cope with fear and anxiety and allow dental treatment. Dr. Piedra follows the oral sedation guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She will discuss different options and monitoring for the protection of your child. Children with certain medical histories may also need a medical consultation before treatment.

General anesthesia

This type of sedation allows the child to sleep during the entire process. General anesthesia is very safe thanks to modern technology and having an experienced dental anesthesiologist. As with any procedure, there can still be risks and possible complications. Please inform us if your child suffers from any medical conditions, including heart, lung or kidney problems. In some cases, general anesthesia may not be an option for your child. Our dental anesthesiologist has special training in the administration of general anesthesia. General anesthesia is safest when delivered by an appropriately trained dental anesthesiologist in an appropriately equipped facility. We take many precautions for your child’s safety and monitor your child closely using special personnel who are trained to manage complications or a dental emergency. Our pediatric dentist will discuss the benefits, risks and reasons for general anesthesia if we recommend it for your child.
